Grace E. Kim is a partner and Deputy Head of the Chemical Department, and serves as co-chair of the firm's Life Sciences practice group. Her practice focuses on patent preparation and prosecution for domestic and international clients in a wide range of technical areas, including battery materials (such as solid electrolytes, solid-state batteries, and anode and cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries), biotechnology, catalysis, chemical separation processes, cosmetics, dyes, glass products, imaging devices, internet of (medical) things (IoT/IoMT), light-emitting materials, medical devices and processes, metallurgy, nanotechnology, optical and electronic devices, pharmaceuticals, plastics, polymers, and semiconductor materials and devices.
In addition to prosecuting cases at the USPTO, Ms. Kim also handles appeals and advocates before the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the Patent Trial and Appeal Board.
Ms. Kim communicates with clients on their technological and business objectives, and focuses on counseling clients on the preparation and prosecution of patent applications and the management of their patent portfolios. Her experience includes due diligence and patentability, validity, and non-infringement opinions.
Prior to joining the firm, Ms. Kim was a junior chemist at Enzo Life Sciences synthesizing and purifying organic small molecule compounds and modified nucleotides. Ms. Kim performed extensive quality control on chemical products, including method development and optimization of drug candidates, drug metabolites, enzyme inhibitors, natural products, receptor ligands, lipids, and fatty acids.
During her undergraduate research internship, Ms. Kim worked on the development of new strategies for the synthesis of organic molecules related to organic and medicinal chemistry.
