Matthew Hampton is a technical advisor in the firm’s Chemical Patent Prosecution group where he focuses on preparing and prosecuting patent applications for domestic and international clients. He is experienced in material sciences, biotechnology, inorganic chemistry and organic chemistry, particularly in the fields of personal care, functional coatings, inks, adhesives and sealants. Matthew has also written and prosecuted patent applications directed to mechanical devices and has furthermore advised on complex matters regarding active pharmaceutical ingredients (API).

Prior to joining Oblon, Matthew worked with a boutique intellectual property firm in The Netherlands. Whilst employed in private practice, Matthew enjoyed long-term secondments within the intellectual property divisions of two international chemical companies, respectively based in The Netherlands and Germany. This “in-house” experience of the interactions between the research and development, business and intellectual property functions of those companies has informed his practice as an external patent counsel.

As a qualified professional representative before the European Patent Office, Matthew has gained considerable experience in conducting oppositions and appeals before that Office, including appearing at oral proceedings before the Opposition Divisions and Boards of Appeal. Matthew is also a registered representative before the Unitary Patent Court and is able to advise on adversarial proceedings before that forum.
